romney was breath-takingly dishonsest last night. mitt romney was more in control of the debate and walked all over jim lehrer and obama didn't fight back. obama had the facts and didn't use them, but this is what obama does. in 2008 when he ran against hillary clinton, people said he wasn't fighting hard enough and against john mccain and in the health care debate, he wasn't fighting hard enough. he won all the fights. >> what's interesting, our first team and others brought up the comparison of the incumbent curse. george w. bush, ronald reagan in '84, george h.w. bush in '92, the president didn't seem to be on his game. mitt romney made a surprise appearance to a cpac event in denver still courting the conservatives but say if you know people that voted for president obama, tell them to come on over to our side. that's ironic because i don't imagine he knows many conservative republicans who voted for president obama the last time or plan to this time. nevertheless, you're no fan of governor romney. did you become a fan last night as a conservative who has doubted his credibi

business growing again, to hire people. >> reporter: romney was aggressive most of the night. but his comments about the 47% had taken a toll on his campaign. the president never brought up those comments. and romney tried to move past them. >> under the president's policies, middle-income americans have been buried. they're just being crushed. i will not, under any circumstances, raise taxes on middle-income families. >> reporter: the president challenged his rival, saying that romney cannot keep his goal of cutting taxes and not add to the deficit without hurting the middle-class. >> now, five weeks before the election, he's saying his big, bold idea is never mind. >> reporter: other topics included medicare reform and the president's health care reform law. while there wasn't a knockout punch by either side, some feel the president may have been too relaxed. >> this time, he seemed just a little detached at times. didn't want to be there. >> reporter: most agree romney led the debate. and after lagging in many polls, this first match-up could give him the boost he needed. >> knowin

-changing performance by mitt romney in last night's debate, republican governor of new jersey, governor chris christie. chris, you happen to be right. >> good morning, mika. good morning, joe. >> what happened, chris? what do you got a crystal ball? chris christie's krystal ball spelled with a "kar"? >> i don't think anybody else was paying attention. every time mitt romney had his back against the wall and they had a debate, he came out and had a game-changing debate. ask rick perry, ask newt gingrich. every time he's done it. and on sunday, i just came out and said exactly what i believed, which was i've seen this guy do this before. and i think he's going to do it again. and he did last night. >> what happened to the president? everybody's stunned. again, his supporters, i think, and it's so strange how the shoe is suddenly on the other foot. we republicans have been so frustrated that mitt romney's not been able to press our case on why the past four years haven't worked. last night you heard democrats so frustrated about the fact that the president couldn't press his case. i mean, why do you thin

, in denver last night. president obama and mitt romney going toe to toe on critical issues, like the economy and health care. and by most accounts, it was mitt romney who emerged the victor. lots of debate analysis ahead on "starting point." we'll be talking live with john mccain of arizona and rand paul of kentucky. from team obama, we'll be speaking with martin o'malley and campaign spokeswoman, jen psaki. plus, obama's former economic adviser, austan goolsbee. first, though, a look at the instant reaction from the debate in the cnn/orc poll, of debate watchers taken right after the debate, 67% say they think romney won. 25% only thought the president won. cnn's dana bash joins us this morning to go over some of the hits and some of the misses. good morning. >> good morning. well, i'm here in new york, so maybe we should talk about what happens, how you get to carnegie hall, practice, practice, practice. and is that clearly is what helped the mitt romney. he spent a lot of time practicing, really for the past month doing these mock debates. and when it comes to the president, he was rusty.

romney would do on wednesday night. that would tighten it in ohio. it would tighten it in north carolina. probably go ahead in north carolina. it would tie it in iowa, probably tie it up in iowa. that's why you can't buy your way out of this mess the romney campaign is in right now, but you can outdebate them. >> more than anything else what seemed to have happened in august was democrats got enthused by their convention more than republicans did. the latest polling shows the enthusiasm gap coming back towards republicans. a git debate could juice that nationally among republicans. >> the people going out to vote is still pretty close. >> they need to turn the page. >> the polls in these swing states, and if i dismissed every other poll but local polls, fox news polls and what the romney people are saying their polls are showing, mitt romney's in trouble. again, if you just look at the locals polls, the fox news polls and the polls that the romney team has internally, mitt romney's in trouble right now. that can all change on wednesday night. >>> coming up, senator john mccain joins us o
